August 2025

We ventured up to Edinburgh again to see the Royal Military Tattoo on the 75th Anniversary of the event and it was just as spectacular as our first trip three years previously.

Ready for the show to start!
The Massed Pipes and Drums begin to enter the Esplanade
The Orchestra of Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Whilst the Armed Forces of Ukraine played, the Castle was lit up in blue and yellow, the colours of Ukraine's flag

All the night's performers on the Esplanade at the end of the performance
Some of the performers form the number 75 in recognition of the Tattoo's 75th Anniversary
Drones light up the sky to form '75' for the Anniversary...
...and King Charles' cypher...
...as well as a treble clef musical symbol

The Lone Piper played 'The Voice of the Piper' to close the show. What a brilliant night!

August 2022

We have long had the Edinburgh Tattoo on the list of things we would like to see and finally made it up to Edinburgh in August. What an amazing spectacle it was:

The Castle Esplanade where the Tattoo is held
The Esplanade set up for the Tattoo
The seating areas take 6 weeks to build and are so high
they rise well over the Castle walls
The Massed Pipes and Drums start the Tattoo
United States Army Field Band
The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Performers
- 50 of the world's best highland dancers
United States Air Force Honor Guard Drill Team
The Castle swathed in red
Banda Monumental de Mexico
Banda Monumental de Mexico - 'Day of the Dead'
The Top Secret Drum Corps from Switzerland
Amazing precision, timing and a touch of humour!
The Castle swathed in blue
Electro Pipes - Fusion of Scottish tradition and electro energy
The Finale starts...
with the entire cast congregating on the Esplanade
and while they march off...
the Tattoo finishes with a fireworks display

During the day of the performance we visited Edinburgh Castle and the many associated museums in the Castle grounds:

Edinburgh Castle on Castle Rock
Castle Gateway with the coat of arms and motto
of the Regiment of Scotland "nemo me impune la cessit"
-"no one attacks me without punishment"
The view from the Castle looking north towards the Firth of Forth
The One O'clock Gun
Field Marshal Douglas Haig, Battle of the Somme 1916
The Duke of Wellington, Battle of Waterloo 1815
One of the cannons of the Half Moon Battery
An arrow slit at the Castle
